Many Federal civil servants are not prepared to immediately transition to a career outside of the Federal Government. Federal workers have tremendous skills and knowledge across every field and are an asset to companies and organizations. With the right support, this unexpected transition can be an opportunity to advance a mission-aligned career in industry, philanthropies, non-profit organizations, academia, and state and local governments, among others. If you choose to return to the federal government in the future, your skills – strengthened with expertise and networks outside of government – will be even more valuable to achieving the goals of the United States government.
Figuring out where to land next can be overwhelming but many have successfully done it - and you will too!
What steps do I take to find a job outside of the Federal Government?
There are several steps that you may move through to identify your next career path and apply for your a job. You don’t need to necessarily do these steps in a particular order. In fact, you might visit any given step multiple times as you move through the process of finding your next role.
